The 1920s Berlin Project celebrates its 8th anniversary!

Standard

I can’t believe that it has been 8 years since that evening in 2009 when I opened my club and had our first little 1920s Berlin themed party in a tiny skybox.
I didn’t expect much of it, I had only been in SL for a week when I started building and I had no idea what I was doing.
But the theme somehow managed to attract the right crowd and within no time a vibrant community of creative, fun, interesting and exciting people started to grow and populate my simplistic pile of prims.
This in turn motivated me and soon I wanted more than a little square with a cinema, shops and club floating high up in the sky.
So I started to improve my building skills, organised more events, did more research and slowly but surely a themed skybox became a neighbourhood and eventually a real city that would withstand the test of time.

It is impossible to explain how much the 1920s Berlin project means to me and I am always touched and excited to hear that it also means a lot to so many others.

On the 30th of May 2017 we’re celebrating the 8th (!) anniversary of our sim and we’re going to celebrate with a week of events!

The 1920s Berlin Project celebrates its 7th anniversary!

Standard

In January 2007 I first joined Second Life, I looked around for a bit, didn’t see anything I liked, didn’t like what I saw and left after a few days.
In February 2009 I decided to run Second Life again, simply to test the ability of my then new computer.
And minutes before I decided that Second Life was not for me and would leave for ever (again) I found the ‘search’ option, tried a few search terms that appealed to me and found the first sim I actually liked; a surreal vintage bar called ‘Flashmans’.
There I suddenly realised that I everything I saw was made by users just like me and that maybe I could create something myself.
And I was doomed lost hooked.
The rest is, as they call it, history.

Within weeks I started working on The 1920s Berlin Project and on May the 30th 2009 I opened the door to a little very basic, noob build bar and let the public in for the first time.
The 1920s Berlin Project was born!

Still a noob who barely knew what she was doing, with no experience whatsoever, I started what would soon grow into a vibrant active community of wonderful people.
In our fantastic neighbourhood people have been extremely creative, active and something great and rare is the result.
I cannot put into words how much the sim and its people means to me and to my delight it means a lot to many of those who live there as well.

On the 30th of May 2016 we’re celebrating the 7th (!) anniversary of our sim and we’re going to celebrate with 7 days of events!

We hope you come and be part of the celebrations, if you don’t want to change your avatar or outfit, don’t worry.
We end our celebrations with a Relaxed Rules day where we have no dress code and everyone (but naked people, Nazis and naked nazis) is welcome.

We also plan to add extra freebies to our teleport area so if you like free stuff… at least check those out!

Winter photo contest & Winter day

Standard

1929 was the coldest winter since records began in Germany, and here in virtual 1920s Berlin we’ve been suffering trough lots of snow, ice and coal shortages.

But we’ve made it (well most of us anyway) and it won’t be long before everything starts to melt.

Soon our city will be dusty, smelly and hot again so before that happens, lets enjoy winter one more weekend.

Today it started snowing again but it will only last just one more weekend, Monday will be the last day of snow till next winter.

Sunday will be our annual ‘winter day’, with a ice skating race on the Spree and our daily ‘Happy Hour’ on ice.

Come take part, winner gets to take home money!

And we also have a seasonal photo contest that shows how that time of year changes our city and our lives.

This last weekend of snow is of course the perfect time to take your winter photo contest picture!

The rules;

Upload a snapshot to our flickr group.

It has to be made in the 1920s Berlin project.

The theme of your photo should be; Winter in Berlin.

The picture we like most will receive 500 Linden!

And remember, if you sign up for SL Go, you get to make pictures with the graphics set to ultra!

Shadows, light effects and a super frame rate may help you make even better photos and this photo contest might be a good excuse to give SL Go a try!

Winner of the Alphabet contest announced

Standard

The alphabet contest had Berliners running around the city for days.

Little fraulein Estella Beningbrough had created an alphabet with letters she found all over the neighbourhood and we asked people to go find out where these letters came from.

Here is the solution;

A = TANZLOKAL
B = ZAUBER
C = CLARRINGTON
D = DECO
E = ELEKTRIC
F = FRISEUR
G = CLARRINGTON’S
H = HUNGER
I = ABADIE
J = JÄGER
K = MALZKAFFEE
L = ELDORADO
M = MAYAMI
N = ODEON
O = RADIO
P = PUDDING
Q = ANTIQUES
R = OSRAM
S = SWANK
T = POSTAMPT
U = WURSTFABRIK or UND
V = VIM
W = WURSTFABRIK or UND
X = TAXIUNTERNEMEN
Y = BAKERY
Z = TREUHERZ

We received many entries and people had a lot of fun exploring the place and finding the 26 letters.

After numbering the answers we asked drunks at Der Keller to give us a random number, the answer with that number was picked as the winner.

Our winners are Herr Doktor Crispin Sturges and Fraulein Zoe Foobiboo, who worked together.

They get to share a bicycle or a portable gramophone player!

Congratulations!

Contest! Win a bicycle or gramophone player!

Standard

We have a new contest for Berlin!

This time you need to puzzle a bit but you can win great prizes!

First the contest.

Little fraulein Estella Beningbrough has been running around the city collecting enough letters to make an Alphabet!

We want you to go out and find all these letters, write down the word they were taken from, put this in a notecard and send it to Jo Yardley.

For instance: A=Tanzlokal, there we’ve given you the first one for free 😉
But do you know where we found it?

So we should get a list of 26 words telling us which letter they were used for.

Time to put your exploring hat on!

The winner gets to choose between a lovely (wearable so no rezzin perms needed) old fashioned bicycle or a portable gramophone player!
You can choose!

Contest closes on sunday the 9th of april, any notes received after this day will be ignored.
All the correct entries will be put in a hat and a winner picked by random.

Here is the alphabet, if you want to see a larger version, simply click it.

Berlin in winter Photo contest winner announced!

Standard

It took us a little longer then expected because we received many amazing photos for our contest.

I asked 4 prominent Berliners to help me select the winners and they all picked different photos!

But one was chosen several times so in the end we chose this picture made by our own Fraulein Melusina Parkin!

She won L$500 with this photo of Unter den Linden.

We love the snow, framing but also the way she edited the picture with photoshop.

Congratulations!
